The Pentagon had previously said that each plane would cost $550 million in 2010 dollars. Air Force officials said they laid down that marker early in the program to signal how firm they would be on price. In the Pentagon briefing Tuesday afternoon, William LaPlante, the Air Force’s top acquisition official, said that an independent cost estimate put the price at $564 million per aircraft in current dollars, a figure he said was “reasonable and achievable.”
He said there are also more than $20 billion in development costs.
In a meeting with reporters last week, LaPlante and Lt. Gen. Arnold Bunch, his military deputy, said officials have gone to great lengths to prevent the kinds of problems that have plagued other programs. They have assigned a special team of acquisitions officials, known as the Rapid Capabilities Office, who handle classified programs with a track record of delivering “eye-watering capabilities,” LaPlante said.
Program officials have also worked hard to guard against “requirements creep,” where new bells and whistles are added to a program, invariably making it more complicated and expensive.
The B-2 bomber became a symbol of that type of failure. Initially the Pentagon planned to buy 132 of the B-2s but ended up buying 21 for about $2 billion each as the Cold War ended.

Analysis of Northrop Grumman’s Long Range Strike Bomber

http://hushkit.net/2015/10/28/analysis-of-northrop-grummans-long-range-strike-bomber/

What can we expect from their design?
A large, cranked-kite layout with a significantly elongated wing and a central body as streamlined as weapon-carriage
and fuel specifications will allow, with buried engines employing both intake and exhaust shrouding features. The question
of optionally-manned appears to have gone quiet at the moment so we will see on that front but it will have to have a cockpit
similar to the B-2 since the nuclear mission required crew capacity. To stay within cost boundaries, it is almost certain that
the aircraft will be smaller than the B-2 and will complement, rather than replace the latter in the deep-penetration deterrence
and power projection role. It will also most likely have highly sophisticated electronic attack capabilities.

Boeing and Lockheed Martin filed a formal protest today (St. Louis, Nov. 6, 2015) asking the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) to review the decision to

award the Long Range Strike-Bomber (LRS-B) contract to Northrop Grumman. Boeing and Lockheed Martin concluded the selection process

for the Long Range Strike Bomber was fundamentally flawed.

"The windscreen that looked so puzzling in renderings is a bit more normal looking in reality. In fact, it is remarkably small with visibility very much optimized for viewing upward and forward. This makes sense for aerial refueling procedures. Beyond that, the visibility looks very poor out of the aircraft. The side small windows, which are curved as in the rendering, look as we originally posited, to likely be a low-observable compromise, with their shape minimizing the aspects that they can be seen by radar, especially from below. It will be interesting to learn more about how this feature came to be and just how far having no windows at all was pushed during the B-21’s design. There were serious discussions of the B-2 having no windows to maximize LO even back in the 1980s when issues with the windscreen and its inner tintable (for sudden nuclear blasts) removable pane were prevalent."

Tack.

Vilket underbart & fint bombflygplan.

B-21 Raider Fleet Size Under Review

Quote

Kathy Warden, Northrop Grumman’s CEO, talked about the present state of the B-21 program and her company’s expectations for the future during a quarterly earnings call earlier today. The Air Force’s publicly stated plan has long been to buy at least 100 Raiders, but there have been discussions for years now about the possibility of the service acquiring significantly more of the bombers.

“I think that’s exactly what the Air Force is looking at,” Warden said. “They are undertaking a force structure design review and the Secretary [of the Air Force Frank Kendall] has been open about looking at the various options they have for increasing their force size, and has talked specifically about NGAD, and we know that B-21 is in the mix, as well.”
