vikingman
Two A-10s crash during training mission at Nellis Air Force Base http://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-air-force/2017/09/07/two-a-10s-crash-during-training-mission-at-nellis-air-force-base/ Two A-10C Warthogs from the 57th Wing at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada crashed during a training flight Wednesday night. In a release Thursday, Nellis said both pilots ejected safely and are being evaluated at a medical center on base. The Warthogs were conducting what Nellis referred to as a routine training mission at the Nevada Test and Training Range at about 8 p.m. The release said that a board will be convened to investigate the crash, and that its cause is not yet known. It’s not yet known if the A-10s can be repaired or if they are lost, said Nellis spokesman Master Sgt. Sanjay Allen.
vikingman
Air Force och US Navy.
vikingman
https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2019/06/13/the-brrrrtttt-keeps-coming-ndaa-would-fully-fund-a-10-warthog-upgrades/ But in a sign of how passe the A-10 debate has become, full funding for Warthog upgrades next year — including re-winging them — just passed the House Armed Services Committee with nary an objection. The panel approved its proposed version of the fiscal 2020 National Defense Authorization Act in a marathon session that concluded early Thursday morning. Gallego and Kirkpatrick noted that the Air Force said in 2017 that nearly half of its A-10 fleet, which consists of 283 aircraft, could be permanently grounded unless funding came through to restart production and re-wing them. vikingman
https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2019/08/13/a-10-re-winging-completed-will-keep-warthog-in-the-air-until-late-2030s/ The Air Force said Monday that it has finished installing new wings on the last of 173 A-10 Thunderbolt IIs. The re-winging of the venerable attack aircraft, popularly known as the Warthog, is expected to allow it to keep flying until the late 2030s, Air Force Materiel Command said in a release. The upgraded wings should last for up to 10,000 flight hours without requiring a depot inspection, AFMC said. And they have an improved, newly designed wire harness to make the wings easier to remove, and lessen the chance of damaging the wing during the removal process. These aircraft account for about 61 percent of the Air Force’s roughly 282 Warthogs. Boeing received a $1.1 billion contract in 2007 to build replacement wings at its Macon, Georgia, plant, and work began in 2011. A-10:an byggdes i 716 exemplar. The second change in production, starting with aircraft #442, was to increase the thickness of the lower skin on the outer wing panels. A tech order was issued to retrofit the "thick skin" to the whole fleet, but the tech order was rescinded after roughly 242 planes, leaving about 200 planes with the original "thin skin" Jag antar att de 109 st som inte fick nya vingar har "thick skin" vingar då. Edited August 14, 2019 by vikingman
vikingman
Glädjande! https://www.defensenews.com/air/2019/08/23/boeing-gets-999m-contract-to-continue-producing-wings-for-the-a-10-warthog/ WASHINGTON — Boeing beat out an unnamed company to win a contract to continue building the replacement wings necessary to keep about 100 A-10 Warthog attack planes flying into the early 2030s. The U.S. Air Force on Aug. 21 awarded Boeing an initial $240 million, which will go toward producing the initial 27 wing sets, Boeing said in a statement. The contract is worth up to $999 million if all options are executed for 112 wing assemblies and 15 wing kits — enough to put new wings on the remaining 109 A-10s that still need replacements.
