Photos released by North Korean state media, KCTV, reveal a new frigate that may be equipped with a Vertical Launching System (VLS) for cruise missiles and/or guided surface-to-air missiles (SAM). The vessel appears to have double the displacement of previous classes, showcasing significant enhancements in size and capability.

A ship with such characteristics represents a significant advancement in North Korea’s naval technology, which has historically relied on an inventory of light corvettes, fast attack craft, patrol vessels and diesel-electric submarines, —many of which are outdated or equipped with legacy weapons and sensors. At present, any insights into the specific systems that will be installed on the new +3,000-ton frigate, the largest warship ever constructed in North Korea, remain speculative. Naval News will continue to monitor developments concerning the frigate’s equipment and provide updates as more information and photos become available.

***UPDATE*** North Korea’s new frigate launched. Not clear weather this is the one previously shown being launched. Note position of radar. Large VLS where hangar should be might be ballistic missiles

Quote

One of the ship’s most striking features is its substantial vertical launch system (VLS) capacity. Directly behind the main gun, the Choe Hyon-class is outfitted with 40 small and 12 large VLS hatches, while the stern area adds another 10 large and 20 small missile tubes. In total, the destroyer features around 82 VLS cells, a remarkable figure for a vessel of its size. These VLS systems allow the Choe Hyon-class to launch a variety of missiles, including supersonic strategic cruise missiles capable of carrying nuclear or conventional warheads, tactical ballistic missiles suited for precision strikes, as well as surface-to-air and anti-ship missiles, enabling the destroyer to engage multiple threat types across vast distances.

Air defense is another critical area where the Choe Hyon-class showcases major advancements. The ship is fitted with the Pantsir-M naval air defense system, a highly capable close-in weapon system (CIWS) combining missiles and autocannons. The Pantsir-M is armed with the naval versions of the 57E6 missiles and Hermes-K missiles, ensuring layered defense against aerial threats, including aircraft, helicopters, drones, and incoming missiles. In addition to its missile armament, Pantsir-M employs two six-barreled 30×165mm GSh-6-30K/AO-18KD rotary cannons, each capable of a staggering rate of fire and effective against targets up to 5 kilometers away.

Quote

Update 30/04/2025: New imagery released today showed the new ship undergoing first weapons testing off Nampo on the 28th and 29th of April. The new pictures clarify several characteristics of the weapon suite onboard the vessel. The main gun is stated by DPRK state media to be a 127 mm calibre-weapon, a surprising choice by established North Korean standards. Furthermore pictures confirm the forward 32 cells contain an unspecified surface to air-missile. The stern magazine does hold two different cruise missile-types. One of which DPRK state media states to be a supersonic weapon. The other missile matches characteristics of the Hwasal-2 cruise missile.

Quote

The new missile destroyer is not only heavily armed for a vessel of her size. Missile armament is also notably varied. Overall Choe Hyon features at least four, but possibly five different configurations of vertical launch systems (VLS) for guided missile ordnance. The total count for all VLS-launched ordnance is 74 cells. Additionally the ship carries another eight missiles in slant launchers. Finally, eight short range SAM are part of a Pantsir M-style CIWS.

KCNA statement describes botched launch. Note mention of hull ruptures. They will likely try to repair it, but worst case this could be an effective write off, depending on the scale of structural damage.

On April 25, 2025, the first ship was launched.

During the launching of the second ship at Chongjin, a "serious accident" occured, potentially damaging the hull in the process. Kim Jong Un declared this to be a serious accident and stated that the ship must be restored by the next plenary of the Party in June.

North Korean Frigate Now Floating Upright After Partially Capsizing During Disastrous Launch

The North Korean frigate that rolled over and was partially submerged during its botched launch ceremony last month is now floating on its own, a new satellite image shows. It is the latest sign of progress after a mishap that embarrassed North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, who attended the ceremony. This roughly fits in with North Korea’s initial estimate that it would take “10-odd days to restore the warship’s side.”

“Kim Jong Un’s instructions to restore” the unnamed Choi-Hyun class ship “before the end of June have been met with skepticism,” 38 North, a website devoted to the analysis of North Korea, noted on Thursday. “Commercial satellite imagery shows workers at the port in Chongjin have taken a significant step towards that goal.”
