Lite insider info från Pakistan: Now that the story has hit the mainstream media I can tell you guys a bit more about it. The story was actually suppose to come out two or three days later in PakObserver but I guess Kamran Khan couldn’t let go the chance of another exclusive story The Letter of Intent (or what ever the precise term for that document is) was signed few months ago when CAS visited Sweden. The memo of the deal was than sent to President Musharaf for approval and this was several weeks ago. The CAS is now suppose to visit Sweden within couple of days and sign on the dotted line - the advance party has already left approximately two-three days ago. This is the good news that CAS was promising to the nation and like all good things in life it came a bit late (Pakobserver är en tidning).

PAF gets air surveillance system; PIA to replace Fokkers with SAAB By Kamran Khan Karachi: Pakistan has taken a big leap to strengthen its fast depleting air power by securing a nod from Sweden to sell Islamabad an Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AWE&CS), informed sources said. This state-of-the-art system will also augment Pakistan Navy’s existing potential for maritime and tactical surveillance, the sources added. Close to final approval is Pakistan’s decision to acquire 14 SAAB 2000 aircraft from Sweden. Seven of these aircraft will be dedicated for the PAF’s AWE&CS while the remaining seven will be acquired by the PIA to replace its fleet of Fokker aircraft, which have already been grounded, the sources said. Several Fokker-related incidents, including the last year’s crash that killed the then chief of air staff, air marshal Mushaf Ali Mir, and 17 other PAF officials, the PIA had decided last year to sell its fleet of 11 aircraft and replace them with compatible ones. The seven SAAB 2000 that will replace the ageing Fokkers on the PIA’s heavily subsidised socio-economic routes will help the airline save about Rs 200 million on the subsidised routes that cost the PIA about Rs 400 million every year. Because of the composite nature of the deal, the PIA would pay only $45 million for the seven SAAB aircraft as against the $98 million for the French ATR and $91 million for the American Dash-8 that will cost about $98 million. For its part the Swedish government has provided a guarantee for the smooth supply of SAAB spare parts as long as the aircraft is flown anywhere in the world, the PIA sources confirmed. Six hundred of such planes are being flown all over the world. The SAAB aircraft for the PAF will be equipped with ERIEYE AWE&C system which can manage airborne early warning; intercept communication; airspace management; surveillance and control borders; detect illegal shipment of weapons and drugs; and coordinate search and rescue operations. It will be two years before the PAF receives its first AWE&C system. The deal would cost Pakistan about $1.7 billion (approximately Rs 90 billion) during the next five years, and it will constitute the biggest defence purchase by the Musharraf administration. During his recently concluded visit to Sweden, President Pervez Musharraf is understood to have held extensive discussions with the Swedish leadership on Pakistan’s interest in the AWE&CS, sources familiar with the discussions in Sweden said. Sweden had earlier turned down Pakistan’s requests on the reasons ranging from democracy to child labour. Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sa’adat Kaleem will be visiting Sweden to further negotiate the deal later this month. The sources said the AWE&CS would not only help Pakistan to counter-balance the Indian acquisition of the Israeli Phalcon airborne surveillance system, it will boast the Pakistan Air Force’s and the Navy’s reaction capabilities by providing early and specific warnings. In the Rs 7.6 trillion defence budget announced this week, the Indian government has earmarked the largest sum for country’s air force by committing to buy new combat aircraft, airborne warning and control systems and missiles during the current year. "The AWE&CS from Sweden, F-7 from China, upgraded Mirages from France and fresh supplies of Mirage spare parts from Libya would help the PAF meet the air challenge from our arch rival," commented a retired PAF air marshal. Pakistan had first shown interest in the purchase of AWE&CS from Sweden in 1995 when the then Pakistani prime minister, Benazir Bhutto, had visited Stockholm and had requested the then Swedish premier, Olf Palme, to approve the sale. "For nine years we have tried to secure these aircraft from SAAB/Erricson," said an official source. While the PAF made a determined effort to induct the SAAB AWE&CS into its fleet, but in its process to replace the Fokkers, the PIA tested the SAAB 2000, fitted with engine from Allison/Rolls Royce ATR and Dash-8 fitted with engines from Pratt and Whitney. With the PAF’s deal for SAAB-based AEW&C almost complete, it is now almost certain that the PIA would approve a strong internal recommendation for the SAAB 2000. "It makes more sense because the SAAB will be setting facility for the maintenance of the PAF’s SAAB 2000 in the country," said an official. "It’s much feasible, both financially as well as technically, to have a combined maintenance facility for the PAF’s and the PIA’s SAAB fleet." http://www.jang.com.pk/thenews/index.html EDIT: länken

@Maverick.

(January 21, 2003): A team of French aircraft manufacturer Dassault will visit Islamabad to discuss a request of purchase (ROP) of Mirage 2000 and Rafale fighter aircrafts by Pakistan. Both the aircrafts are to be dispatched to Pakistan for extensive role demonstration, according to senior Dassault official. Dassault has intensified its bid to sell its line of fighter aircrafts since losing to the American fighter aircrafts in Poland and South Korea. The recent demonstration of BAE/SAAB Gripen fighter aircraft in Pakistan has added more worries to Dassault future in that country. Pakistan has been a long and satisfied operator of Mirage aircrafts, and Dassault is very nervous that it might lose its lucrative market there also. www.forecastinternational.com

ISLAMABAD (June 15, 2004): Pakistan is acquiring State-of-the-art high-tech front role JAS-Gripen Planes for the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) from Sweden. The planes on their induction in the PAF would help restore the balance in air defence over the South Asian skies especially between Pakistan and India. The Gripens are far superior especially between Pakistan and India. The Gripens are far superior than Mig-27, Mig-29, Mig-31 and Mairage-2000, the front role Indian fighters planes. Well-placed defense sources told The News here on Monday that President General Pervez Musharraf is visiting three important Scandinavian countries next month including Sweden and it is expected that the deal for purchase of the Gripens would come up for discussion. The president will also visit Denmark and Norway in the same trip. The sources said that Pakistan is going for JAS-39 version of the Gripen planes, considered to be far more effective than US F-16s, the only front role state-of-the-art planes the PAF is relying and the mainstay of the Pakistan Air Force for any eventuality. The overhauling and maintenance technology of these planes will also be transferred to Pakistan by Sweden once the deal is struck, the sources said. Pakistan has decided to acquire the Gripens after finding difficulties in getting US made F-16s. Islamabad has also studied French-made Rafael and upcoming European planes, Euro fighters. However, it was decided to go into a deal for the Gripens. Pakistan is expecting to induct JF-17 Thunder in the PAF in early 2007 but the Gripens would be available much before that, the sources said. The PAF is in dire need of high-tech planes. The Gripens will adequately fulfil this need, the sources said. Pakistan could not have any high-tech plane after acquiring F-16s some 20 years ago. The JF-17 Thunder will be framed close to the F-16s while the Gripens will be Delta wing planes resembling with French made Mairage-2000 and will be all weather capability planes with multi-role of fighting, bombing and reconnaissance. The supersonic Gripens will be flying with mach-2plus speed, beating in speed all its contemporaries, the sources said. The single seat fighter-attacker-reconnaissance Gripen is heads up and down display (hudd) that replaces normal flight instruments. Its excellence has already proven and with Electronic Counter Measures (ECM) and navigation system, the Gripen is considered to be the current century's plane in true sense, the sources added. The sources said that Sweden is prepared to supply the planes according to the requirement of Pakistan. Foreign Secretary Riaz Khokhar visited Sweden last month and discussed with the authorities in Stockholm schedule of the visit of the presidnet. Both the capitals are engaged in finalising the dates for the visit. It is expected that Lt Gen (Retd) Hamid Nawaz, secretary defense would also be part of the entourage of the president, the sources added. och folk tycker aftonbladet är dålig

Pakistan eyes Swedish Gripen fighter-bomber Indo-Asian News Service Islamabad, June 16 Pakistan hopes to acquire the Swedish JAS39 Gripen fighter-bomber to enable the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) maintain parity with its Indian counterpart, a private TV channel reported on Wednesday. It said President Pervez Musharraf is visiting Sweden during his three-nation Scandinavian tour next month when the Gripen deal is likely to be discussed. Musharraf will also visit Denmark and Norway. The Geo TV report said that Sweden, during foreign secretary Riaz Khokhar's visit last month, had agreed to sell the aircraft to Pakistan. It contended that the Gripen was superior to the PAF's F-16 frontline combat jets. Pakistan had zeroed in on the Gripen after examining the French Rafael jet and the Euro fighter. This was after the US refused to sell additional F-16s to Pakistan, the report, quoting unnamed defence officials, said. The Gripen would also help the PAF counter the MiG-27, MiG-29 and Mirage 2000 jets of the Indian Air Force (IAF), it added. Sweden would also transfer the technology for overhauling and maintaining the aircraft, the report said, quoting unnamed defence officials. Pakistan has planned to buy 40 Gripens with midair refuelling capability that would give them a 3,000 km range and enable them strike deep into enemy territory, the report said. They will be equipped with jamming transmitters and a variety of armament. The PAF will be inducting the JF-17 Thunder that is being developed with Chinese help but this would not happen before 2007, while the Gripen would be available much before that, the report said. Pakistan says the JF-17 matches the F-16. The Gripen, which first flew in 1988, is deployed by the air forces of Sweden, South Africa, Hungary and the Czech Republic http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_830841,00050002.htm
