Japansk minsvepare skadad i kollision med lastfartyg

Inga skadade dock som det verkar. Kollisionen inträffade mitt i natten utanför hamnen i Mihara i södra Japan. Förmodligen är det fråga om s. k. 'glancing blow'.

The Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (MSDF) minesweeper Ukushima has sunk after experiencing a persistent engine fire, according to reports from officials from the 7th Regional Coast Guard. The Coast Guard received a call from the vessel around 9:40am Sunday local time (0040 GMT).

The Ukushima, which left a base in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, on a routine training mission on Sunday, was conducting a drill en route to Kagoshima Prefecture and was sailing some 2.5km off Oshima Island when the call was made.

Just after midnight local time the vessel was reported capsized, extinguishing the fire. It was subsequently described as being sunk when just the bow remained visible above the surface.

Admiral Saito confirmed that the MSDF had never previously had a warship sunk due to fire. He also said a board of inquiry would be set up to investigate the cause of the fire.

Japan minesweeper sinks after catching fire; 1 crew member still missing

The minesweeper, carrying a crew of about 40, reported a fire in the engine room to the 7th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters in Fukuoka Prefecture around 9:40 a.m. Sunday when it was sailing some 2.5 kilometers off Oshima Island in the prefecture.

Another MSDF minesweeper, the Toyoshima, which joined the coast guard in the fire-fighting and rescue operation, reported around 2 p.m. that the fire on the Ukushima was contained, but a flare-up was confirmed later.

The Ukushima's crew had completed evacuation to the Toyoshima by around 3:45 p.m., but an engine room crewman, later identified as 33-year-old petty officer 3rd class Tatsunori Koga, was found not to be present.

One crewman in his 20s who suffered a non-life-threatening injury was taken to hospital.

At the time of the incident, Koga and the crew member who was sent to the hospital were on duty in the engine room, where the fire is believed to have started.
