F-35 combat jet's UK debut at Fairford Air Tattoo cancelled

_76191719_f35.deck.lm.jpg
The first UK appearance of the combat jet due to be used on Britain's new aircraft carriers has been cancelled.
It was hoped the F-35B Lightning IIs would be at the Royal International Air Tattoo in Fairford, Gloucestershire which, starts on Friday.
But last week the entire fleet of F-35's was grounded in the US following an engine fire.
There is still some optimism that the jet might appear at the Farnborough Air Show which starts on Monday.
Organisers of the tattoo said in a statement: "Despite everyone's best endeavours, it has now been decided that the Lockheed Martin F-35B
Lightning II will not fly at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) 2014 as all of the aircraft currently remain grounded."

https://medium.com/war-is-boring/how-much-does-an-f-35-actually-cost-21f95d239398

A single Air Force F-35A costs a whopping $148 million. One Marine Corps F-35B costs an unbelievable $251 million. A lone

Navy F-35C costs a mind-boggling $337 million. Average the three models together, and a “generic” F-35 costs $178 million.

"Journalistik"

http://www.airforcemag.com/DRArchive/Pages/2015/January%202015/January%2008%202015/SPO-F-35-Gun-On-Schedule.aspx

Despite recent media reports that the F-35's GAU-22 25mm gun and electro-optical targeting system (EOTS) don't work—especially for the close air support mission—the two are progressing at the planned schedule, the F-35 System Program Office said Wednesday. While the online Daily Beast said the F-35A won't be able to fire its gun until 2019, the SPO said through spokesman Joseph DellaVedova that the gun was always planned to be operational with the 3F block of software in 2017, and nothing has changed since the development plan was decided in 2005. While a "minor, low-level issue" with software for the gun was discovered during testing in December, this is the kind of thing testing is supposed to find, and "there is no anticipated impact to schedule gun testing or fielding," DellaVedova said. The GAU-22 external gun pod for the F-35B version—which cannot carry it internally due to the lift-fan mechanism that permits vertical flight—will also be operational in 2017, he said. The Air Force plans to declare initial operational capability with the F-35A in August of 2016 with the 3i software version. Like the Marine Corps with its 2B software, the initial USAF version will have capability for air-to-air missiles and JDAM bombs; the gun will join the mix with the later 3F software.

Här sätts Norges första F-35 ihop

http://www.svd.se/naringsliv/branscher/industri-och-fordon/har-satts-norges-forsta-f-35-ihop_4319871.svd

US Air Force plans to replace the F-35 fighter’s avionics, radar and engines are an implicit admission that the current aircraft is already obsolete and that, despite a unit cost of over $250 million, it cannot match the latest foreign fighters coming into service.

He said the Air Force was already looking at follow-on capabilities for the F-35, given rapid technology development by potential adversaries, and ensuring that the infrastructure was in place to allow such upgrades.

"We are already considering and thinking through what are some of the technologies that will be part of the F-35," Harrigian said. "This is not the time to rest on your laurels."

Harrigian gave few details but said potential upgrades could include new avionics systems, radar, laser weapons and a new more fuel-efficient engine.

"I don't think we would take anything off the table at this point," he said. (Reporting by Andrea Shalal; Editing by Ted botha)

"Major General Jeffrey Harrigian, the two-star general named in January to oversee all things F-35 for the Air Force, told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday the program was making good progress, but he was keeping close tabs on key items required to meet the target date.

Those issues include software development, modification of existing jets to incorporate design changes, further work on a complex automated logistics system called ALIS and ensuring a sufficient number of technicians are trained to service the jet."

http://airheadsfly.com/2015/07/09/australia-drops-f-35b-jump-jet-plans/

Australia has dropped plans to buy Lockheed Martin F-35B Short Take Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) fighter aircraft for its Landing Helicopter Ships HMAS Canberra and HMAS Adelaide, various sources report on Thursday 9 July.
Plans to operate the F-35B from both ships first emerged last year and were even confirmed by Defense minister David Johnston. Those plans have now been quietly ditched, the apparent reason being the large number of modifications needed to both brand new ships.

http://www.defensenews.com/story/defense/air-space/2015/07/31/f35-operational-marine-corps-joint-strike-fighter/30937689/

WASHINGTON — In a milestone for the F-35 joint strike fighter, the US Marine Corps today declared the F-35B jump-jet model to have achieved initial operational capability (IOC).

The news means that the Marines consider the F-35B model – one of three designs of the multi-role fighter — to be an active plane that can perform in operations the same way any other active aircraft in its arsenal can.

Reducering av antalet RAF och Royal Navy Lockheed F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters.

Of course, aircraft carriers aren’t much use without aircraft, either. Each QE-class ship can accommodate 40 aircraft of various types, but not all of those are going to be fighters. (Indeed, the British are planning to operate Queen Elizabeth with nothing but helicopters until its first F-35s are delivered). The maximum capacity for F-35s is reportedly 36 aircraft, but during routine operations, each carrier might have only a dozen F-35Bs on board.

Will each carrier eventually get a full complement of F-35s? “Any sort of further commitments on details… whether it’s numbers of aircraft or numbers of frigates or what have you, that will be coming out of the SDSR process,” Mordaunt said. “But what I would say [is that in the SDSR] there will also be a lot of radical thinking about the kinds of things we will be operating… .from the carriers,” not just F-35s but “other air assets, whether they’re manned or unmanned..”hmsqueenelizabethcarrier

One of the savviest aerospace industry analysts around guesstimated the British would end up with 30 F-35Bs per carrier — eventually. “60 Bs, that would probably do the job,” Richard Aboulafia told me.

“The original buy of 138 F-35s [for the Royal Navy and RAF combined] looks unlikely,” Aboulafia said. “If we’re looking at acquisitions through 2030, with some F-35s acquired to replace earlier Eurofighters, we’ll likely see at least 100 UK F-35s”: 60 Bs for the Royal Navy and 40 As for the Royal Air Force.

F-35: Now For The (Next) Hard Part, Says Bogdan

The greatest near-term challenge: Every F-35 built so far — in fact, every F-35 that will be built for a few years to come — will require some kind of modification to achieve full capability. The key component is the 3F iteration of the software package, but many aircraft will require labor-intensive physical alterations as well.

Today there are 126 F-35s of various models in service (plus 19 test aircraft); by the end of 2019, that will skyrocket to 493. “When we have those 493 airplanes out in the field in 2019, guess how many of them will be in what I consider to be the right configuration?” Bogdan asked the ComDef conference here. “Not. A. One. Every one of the airplanes coming off the production line today and coming off the production line for the next two and a half years, plus all the airplanes we’ve built already, will need some form of modification to get them up to the full capability that we promised the warfighter. That is a massive undertaking..”

The price is not just dollars but time: Taking an aircraft out of service for modifications means pilots can’t use it to train. That’s a major concern when you have to train a whole new fleet of pilots, Bodgan acknowledged, especially to meet the Air Force’s planned Initial Operational Capability (IOC) date for its F-35A model.
